The boom in artificial intelligence, which had already caused scarcity of chips, memory, and power, has faced a new critical constraint - a severe shortage of skilled workers. According to major construction supplier CEO Benoît Bazin, the shortage of specialists needed to build data centers is starting to severely hinder multi-billion dollar projects in North America and Europe.
Unlike standard commercial facilities, the creation of modern computing complexes requires specialized experts: electricians, fiber optics installers, high-voltage specialists and cooling systems. Because training such personnel takes years, the reserve is not keeping up with explosive growth in investment. The situation has escalated to such an extent that tech giants are now forced to fund their own training programs, and competition for electricians in regions like Texas is already causing delays in conventional housing construction.
While major corporations can easily find capital, land, and contracts for energy supplies, they are powerless to cope with the physical absence of skilled workers. In addition to human shortages, the industry still faces capacity constraints, water scarcity, and growing resistance from local residents. Experts warn that it is staffing shortages that could prove to be the most intractable barrier to global AI infrastructure expansion.
