Carter Eck, a 26‑year‑old resident of North Carolina, used the money he earned from selling his Pokemon collectible cards to cover the down payment on his house three years ago. Now he has to part with the rest of his collection to pay for legal services and keep the property. The reason is a bill from the homeowners association for $11,000. The organization claims that Eck owes membership fees, late fees, and must also fix a violation related to a fence on the property.

The ratio of the amounts in the issued invoice is telling. According to the homeowner, out of the claimed eleven thousand dollars, only about eight hundred and forty dollars represent actual membership fees, while the rest consists of accrued fines. Ek told his story to Action 9 News, and then provided the details on a specialized forum on Reddit. There, he described the situation as a crazy moment that has become a vicious circle, as he now has to trade the same cards that once helped him purchase a home.

Carter Eck noted that when he contacted the management company to find out where to send payments to the homeowners’ association, he was told that they couldn’t help and advised him to call their lawyer. He also pointed out that some of the penalties were imposed without prior notice and without the opportunity to correct the violation within the allotted timeframe. Attempts to resolve the issue directly with the association yielded no results. The hearing in the case is scheduled for November 23, 2026. Ek stated that many more stages still lie ahead before this date, but the situation is developing in the right direction, and he plans to share new details.

The timing for the collection sale turned out to be opportune. The Pokémon trading card market is experiencing another surge in prices and interest amid the franchise’s 30th anniversary, so old sets from childhood can now fetch quite substantial sums.
