Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated that the most legitimate complaint against artificial intelligence developers is that they have not yet fulfilled their lofty promises to bring real benefit to the world. The leader expressed this opinion on the social media platform X, linking society’s negative attitude towards the technology to a fundamental crisis of trust. The publication was a response to a message from investor Gavin Baker, who accused the head of Anthropic of using overly negative rhetoric and urged him to speak more actively about the benefits of neural networks. According to Amodei, it will no longer be possible to change people’s attitudes through marketing: instead of promises that artificial intelligence will help defeat cancer, the industry will have to show tangible results.
The investor noted that Amodei has lost the regulatory debate and should become a more positive advocate for his own industry, especially as the company prepares to go public. In response, the head of Anthropic noted that he pays roughly equal attention to both the risks and the benefits of the technology, recalling his essay “Machines of Loving Grace,” which focuses on the positive impact of powerful AI on medicine and the economy. However, he agreed that there is a negative backdrop, emphasizing that ordinary people do not trust corporations and always suspect the tech industry of trying to deceive them. Amodei acknowledged that the reasons for such distrust have been forming for decades, and artificial intelligence is just the latest manifestation of it. At the same time, he placed the responsibility on the industry itself, noting that it was impossible to rectify the situation with a new advertising campaign, and that only a real solution to global problems, such as the treatment of serious diseases, would work.
Not all market participants agreed with the approach taken by the head of Anthropic. The well‑known AI researcher Yann LeCun replied that he has believed for about ten years that the only correct direction is the development of widely accessible and open technologies. According to him, artificial intelligence, like the printing press and the internet, enhances human capabilities by expanding access to knowledge, so society needs diverse and open models. This approach diverges from Anthropic’s policy, which considers it necessary to strengthen security requirements as the capabilities of the systems grow. Another objection was raised by Angel Brodin, a representative of OpenAI. She drew attention to the pharmaceutical industry, where real advances in medicine do not prevent it from remaining among the sectors with a low level of public trust. In her view, the attitude towards AI companies will depend not only on technological breakthroughs but also on the availability of products, the transparency of pricing, and the fair distribution of economic benefits.
