Egypt has officially inaugurated the first operational line of its groundbreaking automated monorail system, marking a major milestone as the first of its kind on the African continent. According to reports from CNN, the newly launched 56.5-kilometer route, which began carrying passengers in May, connects the densely populated Nasr City district with the newly constructed Administrative Capital east of Cairo. Once the entire network is completed, it will surpass the current record-holder in Chongqing, China, to become the longest monorail system globally, offering a vital solution to the severe transit congestion plaguing the Egyptian megacity.

The fully automated transit network is engineered to transport approximately 500,000 commuters daily, with trains reaching speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour and handling a capacity of 45,000 passengers per hour in each direction. Operated entirely without drivers, the system relies on an advanced radio signaling infrastructure to manage train movements, door operations, and emergency responses. This massive undertaking stems from a $3 billion contract signed in 2019 with the French multinational Alstom and its partners, who manufactured a fleet of 68 trains comprising 272 carriages. The network will soon be expanded by a second 43.8-kilometer line linking the 6th of October City to Giza, pushing the total track length beyond 100 kilometers.

Despite the monumental achievement, the project has sparked public debate given Egypt's broader economic landscape, as the nation has recently allocated roughly $106 billion toward various infrastructure developments while its external debt has surged past $163 billion. Nevertheless, government officials maintain that this state-of-the-art transit artery is a cornerstone for the future success of the New Administrative Capital. The ambitious urban development is projected to eventually accommodate around 6.5 million residents and generate approximately 2 million new employment opportunities, fundamentally reshaping the country's economic and demographic geography.
