Experts predict an acute shortage of personnel in the field of quantum cybersecurity by 2035

Sudipta Paul Chowdhury, Marketing Director at QNu Labs, identified quantum cybersecurity as one of the most sought-after professional specializations in the coming decade. The key driver of this trend is the systematic transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards in the world's leading economies. After the approval of the first standards by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in August 2024, the industry moved from the academic plane to the stage of practical application. A number of jurisdictions have established mandatory deadlines for the transition of critical information systems to new security protocols, which creates a steady long-term demand for relevant specialists.
Such regulatory pressure is driven by the need to neutralize the risk, known as "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later" (Harvest Now, Decrypt Later). This model assumes that attackers can accumulate encrypted data in the present tense for their subsequent decryption with the advent of powerful quantum computing systems. According to an analytical report by McKinsey, the cumulative economic effect of the introduction of quantum technologies by 2035 could reach 2.7 trillion dollars. However, the market is already facing a significant shortage of qualified personnel: there are three open vacancies for one suitable candidate. By 2035, the global economy will need about 840,000 specialized employees with the current industry staff of less than 17,000 people, which makes these specialists one of the highest paid in the labor market.
Demand in this segment covers not only cryptographers, but also system migration engineers, system architects, and compliance specialists. Experts identify large developing economies as one of the training centers for such personnel, where large-scale educational and research programs are being implemented aimed at creating quantum key distribution networks and building sustainable human resources. This strategic initiative fully corresponds to the global trend, where the technological readiness of a business and the availability of qualified specialists are recognized as prerequisites for achieving a quantum advantage.
