Japan revised tourist visas for the first time in almost a half-century, and the changes were substantial. The government has announced a visa fee increase of around 400%, making entry into the country markedly more expensive for citizens of states that require a permit. The new tariffs announced on 20 June are effective from 1 July.

The cost of a one-time visa increased from 3,000 to 15,000 yen (roughly $19 to $93), and a multiple visa increased from 6,000 to 30,000 yen (from $37 to $186). Foreign Minister Toshitsu Motegi explained that the move was driven by five decades of inflation. The authorities do not expect an immediate negative impact on tourist flows.

Despite a five-fold increase, travel portal TravelPirates notes that Japan still remains among the countries with relatively low visa fees. It should also be noted that US and EU citizens are exempt from visa requirements until 2028, after which they will only need to fill out a simple online application form. The decision of the authorities is largely related to the growing problem of overtourism. In recent years, Japan has faced inadequate behavior by foreign visitors: from the actions of scandalous streamer to mass littering and intrusion into private homes, forcing some localities even to cancel traditional cherry blossom festivals.
