Uber has imposed a $1,500 per month per employee limit for the use of AI tools such as Claude Code and Cursor. The measure came after Uber completely exhausted its annual AI budget in April, owing to explosive growth in domestic demand.

Previously, the company actively encouraged developers to use AI, and now, according to CEO Darya Khosrovshahi, AI agents create about 10% of all code changes. However, COO Andrew MacDonald has acknowledged that it is still difficult to link directly the growth of AI-spending with new features for customers.

As labor efficiency improves, Uber has also announced plans to rein in the hiring rate.
