Sales of first-party PlayStation exclusive games have decreased by 30 million copies between fiscal years 2020 and 2024, according to an analysis of Sony's financial reports. The peak occurred in FY2020 with a record 58.4 million units sold, driven by the PS5 launch, major hits (The Last of Us Part II, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ghost of Tsushima), and pandemic-related factors. However, by FY2024, the volume dropped to 28.9 million copies, marking a nearly 50% decline from the maximum values.
A slight recovery to 32.1 million copies was recorded only in FY2025 following the releases of Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2. Experts, including Stephen Totilo from Game File, attribute the overall downturn to a weak release schedule, failed projects like Concord, and an unsuccessful games-as-a-service strategy. A prominent example is the 2022 acquisition of Bungie for $3.7 billion: in its May report, Sony recorded a $765 million asset impairment loss, a figure that continues to grow as the studio's market position weakens.
Currently, Bungie is preparing for mass layoffs following the final major update to Destiny 2, scheduled for June 9, as it shifts focus to the Marathon project and the incubation of new games. Against the backdrop of this portfolio restructuring, industry attention is focused on the upcoming PlayStation State of Play broadcast, scheduled for today at 00:00 Moscow time, where new announcements are expected to help reverse the negative sales trend of the exclusive lineup.
