Retail sales in the UK grew by 1.2% in May compared to the previous month, significantly exceeding economists' expectations of a mere 0.5% increase. On an annualized basis, the figure was 3.2%, also significantly higher than the 1.9% forecast. For the three-month period ending in May, sales increased by 0.4%.
The main contributors to growth were non-food stores, especially department stores, which performed well under favorable weather conditions. Sales of computer and telecommunications equipment continued to grow with the release of new products in March, as well as online stores that recorded growth after strong performance in previous months.
May growth followed a 1.0% decline in April (revised from the initial -1.3%). Retailers explained the positive dynamics of promotions and hot weather, which stimulated buying activity in both online stores and department stores.
