The American electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian is implementing a project to create an energy storage system utilizing used batteries, in collaboration with Redwood Materials. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal.

This initiative represents the largest solution of its kind among U.S. automakers. The system will be located at the company’s manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, occupying an area roughly the size of a small parking lot. Once commissioned later this year, the facility will utilize more than 100 refurbished battery packs sourced from Rivian’s own electric vehicles.

The installation is expected to provide approximately 10 MWh of energy—a capacity roughly equivalent to that of 1,000 residential energy storage systems. The use of such storage units will help reduce strain on the power grid during hours of peak demand while simultaneously lowering the facility’s operational costs.

The batteries will be sourced from test vehicles and cars that are no longer roadworthy but still possess functional battery packs. J.B. Straubel—founder of Redwood Materials and co-founder of Tesla—noted that such solutions open up new opportunities for resource reuse within the energy sector.
