The American neurotechnology company Science Corp. has raised $230 million in funding to commercialize an implant designed to restore vision, as well as to develop new brain-computer interface devices.
Following the new funding round, the company's valuation reached $1.5 billion. According to Bloomberg, this makes Science the second-most valuable company in the brain implant sector after Neuralink.
Since its founding, Science Corp. has raised approximately $489 million in funding. In recent years, investors have been actively investing in such projects: over $2 billion has been directed to six of the largest American companies developing neural implants.
These technologies make it possible to create brain-computer interfaces. They could help patients with severe conditions, for example, by allowing paralyzed people to control a computer with their thoughts or by partially restoring vision to the blind.
So far, none of these devices have received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for long-term commercial use. Therefore, today they are used only in clinical trials.
