Sony management has officially commented on rumors that the cost of PlayStation 6 components has reached $960, and the retail price of the new one may overtake by a thousand dollars. In a question-and-answer session, the head of the company, Hideaki Nisino, made it clear that the era when a Japanese giant subsidized console prices to capture markets was over.

According to the top executive, Sony cannot and will not physically absorb the huge price increases for components. The company has already raised prices for current devices outside of Japan, and, as Nisino notes, this did not affect consumer demand. Sony’s guiding principle is now to forego the sale of iron at a substantial loss.

The traditional business model, which involves selling the consoles themselves and then playing down the costs of selling games, is collapsing under pressure from an unprecedented crisis in the memory market. Analysts warn that chip prices could soar by another 50% in the third quarter, and serious easing should wait until 2028.

While unofficial sources will read the 2027 release of PS6, the final price could be far more shocking. With the projected doubling of component costs, $1,000 per next-generation console is starting to look more like an optimistic scenario than a real ceiling.
