South Korea plans to conclude an oil supply agreement with Kazakhstan as it seeks to reduce its reliance on the Middle East. According to Reuters, details of the deal—including volumes and logistics—could be announced in the near future.
Currently, approximately 70% of the country's oil imports originate from the Middle East. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have heightened risks to energy security, prompting Seoul to seek alternative sources.
Supplies from Kazakhstan are viewed as a strategic avenue, despite the lengthy logistics involved. Delivery times are estimated at 50 to 60 days, a timeframe comparable to imports from the United States.
South Korea has already secured additional resources; agreements with the UAE provide for the supply of 24 million barrels of oil. Authorities anticipate that this diversification will help mitigate risks to the industrial sector and alleviate economic pressure.
