The dormant bitcoin wallet of the Satoshi era came to life 14 years later amid a $285 billion lawsuit

Bitcoin wallet, which has not been active since March 2011, moved funds for the first time in 14 years: on June 2 from an address starting with 1LwWt, 15 BTC were sent, and another 20.55 BTC went to the delivery address. At the time of receipt, these Bitcoin coins were worth less than $1, and now their value has risen multiple times. CoinDesk journalists have linked this address to a high-profile lawsuit in the New York City Supreme Court, where plaintiffs are seeking recognition of ownership of 3.8 million BTC (about $285 billion) from tens of thousands of "sleeping" wallets.

The case filed on March 11, 2026, by anonymous plaintiff Noah Doe and two companies from Wyoming relies on section 7-B of the New York Personal Property Act, which allows assets to be considered "abandoned property." The court allowed notification of owners through messages in field OP_RETURN, and the address 1LwWt received such a request on July 31, 2025 with a deadline for response until November 5. However, the owner remained silent - and only seven months after the deadline had expired did he make the first transaction.

Alex Thorne of Galaxy Research noted that the company tracked this wallet as "defendant 38215" in the Noah Doe case: "It turns out it wasn’t actually abandoned." According to Galaxy, hundreds of other addresses from the original list have already moved funds after notifications were sent and have been removed from the final list of respondents. The activation of an ancient wallet highlights the complexity of claims to "sleeping" Bitcoin and is reminiscent of a wave of old coin movements that CryptoQuant called the largest long-term supply release in history.
