The Ethereum Foundation team has warned developers and users about possible disruptions in the operation of crypto wallets and related software due to the upcoming Glamsterdam network update. On August 17, representatives of the foundation reported that the hard fork will significantly change the blockchain’s gas model, which may lead to the failure of some existing software. Crypto wallets, data indexers, and various fee estimation tools may be affected. Programmers are strongly advised to check the compatibility of their systems in the public Plataberget testnet.
The Ethereum Foundation has placed special emphasis on tools with a fixed maximum gas limit. According to the developers, such solutions will stop working correctly after the update is activated and will require mandatory code changes. The problem is directly related to the EIP‑8037 network improvement proposal. This proposal adds a separate state‑gas dimension for operations that create a new state in the blockchain. A regular ether transfer to an existing address will retain the standard cost of twenty‑one thousand gas units, but sending coins to a completely new address will result in an additional fee charge.
The developers have called on the community to review smart contracts that are based on outdated logic, which assumes that the amount of twenty‑one thousand units covers absolutely any ether transfer. It is also necessary to update the code that calculates the fee solely based on the amount of gas without taking into account the new parameters. According to the Forkcast service, the Plataberget testnet was launched on August 13, 2026. The activation of the Glamsterdam update on this test network is scheduled for August 20. Before moving to the main network, there will be a feedback phase and an update of the client software, which is estimated to take approximately one month. After that, additional testing will be carried out on the Sepolia and Hoodi networks. It should be recalled that in August, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin identified quantum protection and the integration of artificial intelligence as the main priorities for the network’s development in the coming years.
