The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission will hold the first meeting of its Advisory Committee on Innovation on August 20. The committee’s chair, Michael Selig, announced the agenda, which includes crypto assets, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets. The body includes thirty‑five industry representatives, including the heads of leading cryptocurrency exchanges, event contract platforms, and traditional financial institutions. The meeting will be held in Washington, with the possibility of virtual participation for the public.
Seven seats on the committee were awarded to representatives of platforms for concluding contracts for sporting events and betting companies. Among them are the CEOs of Kalshi and Polymarket, Tarek Mansour and Shane Coplan, as well as the heads of DraftKings, FanDuel, Robinhood, Crypto com, and Bitnomial. The cryptocurrency group turned out to be even broader: it includes Brian Armstrong from Coinbase, Hayden Adams from Uniswap Labs, Brad Garlinghouse from Ripple, Tyler Winklevoss from Gemini, Arjun Sethi from Kraken, Anatoly Yakovenko from Solana Labs, and Sergey Nazarov from Chainlink Labs. In addition, the board includes executives from CME Group, Nasdaq, Cboe, and Intercontinental Exchange, as well as well‑known venture capital investors.
The establishment of the committee is taking place against the backdrop of increased regulatory activity by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission regarding forecast markets and event contracts. In June, the regulator proposed a concept for identifying cases where such contracts contradict public interests, and in August it issued recommendations on the self‑certification of market maker programs. Despite the fact that the committee is an advisory body and does not have regulatory powers, it will make it possible to officially record the positions of the largest industry players on complex issues related to the formation of new financial products and markets. The first meeting of the new committee will serve as a platform for discussing current topics at the intersection of technology, financial regulation, and digital assets.
