US President Donald Trump signed two executive orders aimed at accelerating quantum computing and the transition to post-quantum cryptography. The decision was in response to China’s growing activism in this area, including its recent five-year plan to build scalable quantum computers and a quantum network for "space-Earth" communication. Trump emphasized that the US would invest more than ever in American leadership of quantum technologies to maintain its technological advantage.
The first paper mandates federal agencies to develop a unified approach to commercializing quantum computing and protecting sensitive technologies. Within 180 days, industry agencies must update the National Quantum Strategy and launch QC-ADDS - a national initiative to build a powerful quantum computer capable of advancing scientific discoveries.
The second decree focuses on national security and gives the Office of Administration and Budget and the National Director for Cyber Security the task of accelerating the transition of all state systems to post-quantum encryption standards. While major blockchains like Ethereum and Solana are already developing their own post-quantum roadmaps, the Bitcoin community continues to debate how best to protect long-inactive coins from future quantum threats.
