Why Belarusians are choosing Foreign Currency deposits less often

In 2025, the US dollar proved to be an outsider among the world's key currencies. At the end of the year, it showed the worst dynamics in the group of 17 major currencies, which significantly affected the attitude towards it from both investors and private investors. Against the background of the weakening of the dollar, as well as the policy of de-dollarization, term deposits in national currency are becoming increasingly popular among the population.

The statistics of the National Bank confirms this trend. According to the results of the third quarter of 2025, the volume of deposits of individuals in foreign currency in terms of Belarusian rubles amounted to 7.6 billion rubles, which is 1.3% less than in the previous quarter. Analysts do not rule out that the decline continued at the end of the year.

Most of the foreign currency savings are placed in irrevocable deposits — about 5.4 billion rubles in equivalent. During the quarter, their volume decreased by 1.5%. The number of depositors holding funds in foreign currency is also decreasing: in July–September 2025, they decreased by 2%, to 303 thousand people. For comparison, the population of Brest alone at the beginning of 2024 exceeded 344 thousand people.

Extremely low interest rates remain an additional factor in reducing interest in foreign currency deposits. According to the National Bank, in December 2025, the average yield on new dollar deposits of individuals for up to one year was only 0.28% per annum, and on deposits for more than a year — 0.57%. Irrevocable and long-term deposits remain the most profitable, but even there the rates remain modest.

Some banks offer conditions above the average market conditions. But even such offers are significantly inferior to the profitability of ruble deposits, which continues to shift the interest of the population towards the national currency.
