Alcoa has announced that its Australian division will pay $36 million (A$55 million). The amount will be paid as part of its obligations for historical land clearing, as Alcoa has agreed with the government to upgrade its environmental permits in Western Australia.
The company will conduct an assessment of mining areas until 2045 as part of amendments to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. This is necessary to ensure that the impact on the country's significant flora and fauna is assessed.
Alcoa further stated that it will limit land clearing to 800 hectares per year, increase reclamation to 1,000 hectares per year by 2027, and provide all monetary and material compensation that will meet federal requirements. Pre-tax costs could reach $19 million, with payments scheduled for 2026.
The company's Australian division provides about 5,500 jobs, and cash investments in local suppliers in 2024 amounted to A$2.7 billion.
