Algorand Foundation published a roadmap for the network’s transition to "broad quantum sustainability" by the end of 2027. The recent analysis of Google Quantum AI has provided a boost to faster work, showing that quantum computers can crack current cryptography on elliptical curves with fewer resources than expected. As early as the third quarter of 2026, Algorand plans to implement native support for post-quantum accounts based on the Falcon scheme, as well as hybrid accounts and multi-signature, combining classic and post-quantum keys.
Special attention will be paid to protecting the consensus mechanism, as the current VRF and Ed25519 algorithms are vulnerable to quantum attacks. The Foundation intends to present a study on post-quantum VRF by early 2027 and implement a hybrid signature model. Algorand Foundation Technical Director Bruno Martins emphasized that post-quantum security cannot be "brought to a conclusion" after Q-Day, so the network starts preparing in advance, despite the risks of reduced productivity previously faced by BNB Chain.
