Anthropic Allocates 5% of Shares to Public Benefit Fund

On October 18, 2026, Anthropic announced that it is allocating a portion of its shares to a new public benefit fund – the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a structure within the company whose share grows as the company grows. Upon shareholder approval, the fund will receive 5% of the shares, plus an additional 2% at the discretion of the board of directors for every 50% increase in the company's value above a set baseline.

The fund is being established as a wholly company-owned LLC, rather than a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization: according to Anthropic, this provides flexibility between different forms of donations. No shares owned by the LLC will be used for lobbying or political donations – neither in the US nor abroad. The fund will be able to make substantial donations to traditional nonprofits or distribute funds directly to specific population groups.

Anthropic is a public benefit corporation: a status that commercial companies choose to balance financial goals and social impact. The co-founders committed to donating 80% of their shares at the founding. A stock matching program, in which about half of the employees participate, allows workers to donate shares, and the company matches them. With the new commitment, about 20% of Anthropic's shares will be dedicated to public benefit – plus additional percentages for achieving valuation milestones.

Impact on the labor market is one example the fund might address. Anthropic has already allocated $200 million to study and address this issue: this is the Anthropic Economic Futures Research Fund, whose research agenda was published on July 22, 2026. The fund will support projects mainly in the $5–30 million range, with flexibility upwards for well-developed initiatives with high potential, and will not fund anything below $1 million. Applications are accepted from accredited universities, independent institutes, research and nonprofit organizations with experience in large-scale field experiments; individual researchers – only as leaders of institutional projects. The fund is declared global, but directions are currently skewed towards the US. Anthropic promises to later reveal the fund's structure and governance and release a report on the mission's progress. The company plans a major IPO already in November.
