Anthropic Warns of Threat from Accelerating AI Development

Anthropic reported that future models might soon reach the threshold of rapidly accelerated progress through the application of AI in research. The warning appeared on November 2, 2026, in an updated S-1/A form filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) ahead of the planned IPO.

This refers to the process where AI helps create more advanced versions of itself. Subsequent models can accelerate the development of new systems. This mechanism is called recursive self-improvement, but Anthropic does not claim to have achieved a fully autonomous cycle yet.

What Anthropic told investors

The company uses Claude for writing code, testing, and optimizing new models. It estimates that expanding this practice could accelerate technological development more than improving methods for assessing their safety.

Anthropic emphasized: “We have not designated any of our current models as exceeding this threshold.”

The warning is based on internal calculations and expectations regarding future systems. The document also states that the company may not always detect development acceleration in time, as some assessments rely on metrics available with a delay.

How the company intends to control risks

In its Responsible Scaling Policy, Anthropic defines one of the thresholds as doubling the overall progress rate of AI, which can be reasonably linked to the automation of research and development. This does not mean simply doubling employee productivity.

As it approaches such a level, the company provides for enhanced monitoring of internal processes, model behavior checks, and tests for bypassing constraints. Anthropic is also considering policy changes to maintain human control over the creation of advanced AI systems.

For potential shareholders, the risks are not only related to the safety of technologies. If the capabilities of the models start to develop faster than control tools, the company may face product release delays, additional expenses, and distribution restrictions.

The timing of reaching the threshold is not defined. Anthropic continues to verify assessments and does not claim that recursive self-improvement has already become a reality.
