Australia’s Employment Department has published its first national report on the impact of AI on the labor market. From November 2022 to February 2026, employment in the most vulnerable professions to AI increased by 5.6%, compared to 9.5% in the least affected. The model shows ~2% behind expected trend for professions with high AI susceptibility, but the result is sensitive to methodology.
At risk are routine cognitive professions: office workers, data entry operators, accountants, marketers, programmers. In safety - manual labor and care: caretakers, electricians, drivers, cleaners. There is a gender and educational gap: 43.7% of men in vulnerable occupations and 43.7% with higher education, compared to 69.5% and 14.9% in protected occupations.
Despite the shift, there are no mass shocks: unemployment is 4.2% (below pre-pandemic levels), employment is 64% (above average). Employment of software developers increased by 25% to 199,000. The market for graduates is stable.
