BNY Executes First Deal with Tokenized Assets

Bank of New York Mellon (BNY) and Citadel Securities executed the first repo transaction using tokenized U.S. Treasury assets. In this transaction, a 2-year Treasury note was tokenized and acquired by Citadel Securities through the Tradeweb platform. This event marked the first such occurrence on a major tri-party repo platform. The tokenized note was recorded on BNY's private digital ledger and used as collateral for an overnight repurchase agreement. After being registered on the digital ledger, the transaction was completed within minutes, significantly faster than the standard T+1 settlement cycle for traditional Treasury transactions. BNY provided the cash, simultaneously demonstrating how digital securities can become the foundation for institutional financing.

BNY plans to introduce digital cash and tokenized deposit services, as well as expand Treasury settlement operations during trading hours in Europe and Asia next year. As stated in BNY's press release, the transaction covers several stages of the Treasury trading lifecycle, including execution, settlement, and collateral financing. The use of tokenized assets in established financing processes is significant for enhancing the efficiency of financial systems.

Carolyn Weinberg, Head of Market Innovation and Transformation at BNY, noted that this transaction illustrates how tokenized assets can be used in multiple institutional financial processes: “By using a tokenized representation of the Treasury in settlements and financing, we are creating a more cohesive, efficient financial system,” she said. Dan Doherty, Head of Digital Asset Operations at Citadel Securities, added that effective collateral movement is a key element of successful markets: “The effective movement of high-quality collateral is fundamental to well-functioning markets.” Overall, this transaction underscores the importance of the mobility of tokenized assets in an institutional context and demonstrates how financial infrastructure must meet the demands of an active market where operations continue for more than 24 hours a day.
