Cardano has achieved significant integration into the payment system following the addition of native support in the official x402 codebase. This implementation, developed by engineers at Cardano Foundation, allows for the integration of Cardano into tools for working with the open payment protocol, simplifying its use for developers of x402-based applications. x402 has become a well-known protocol developed by Coinbase, utilizing the HTTP status code '402 Payment Required' for direct online payments. This solution enables services to inform other applications or AI agents that access to them requires a certain payment.
The new solution includes client, server, and auxiliary components, as well as working examples. Support covers the main Cardano networks, pre-release, and preliminary versions. This approach demonstrates increased flexibility for developers: they no longer need to start with an independent implementation of Cardano, as native support provides standard client and server components that can serve as a starting point for application development.
The integration could significantly expand the number of applications capable of accepting payments based on Cardano. An important aspect is the simultaneous facilitation of mutual compatibility. Since x402 is designed to be network and currency agnostic, applications can support multiple payment networks within a single HTTP process. Support from x402 Foundation is also ongoing, with new partnerships with other organizations creating better conditions for the implementation of x402. In July, x402 Foundation was launched with support from dozens of major companies, including Amazon Web Services, American Express, Circle, Coinbase, Google, Mastercard, Ripple, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe, and Visa.
