Castle Labs: Hyperliquid Achieves Liquidity Metrics Comparable to CEX

The Castle Labs study found that the Hyperliquid platform maintains liquidity at the median levels of centralized exchanges such as Binance, Bybit, and OKX for four out of five examined crypto assets. This indicates that Hyperliquid demonstrates impressive results in providing liquidity, matching the metrics of the largest centralized platforms. Additionally, trading on Hyperliquid is less costly than on the mentioned exchanges. However, it is important to note that there remains a gap in how platforms determine prices for stocks and commodities in the context of a closed primary market.

Castle Labs analyzed live orders for high-value assets and concluded about comparative liquidity. The study showed that decentralized finance (DeFi) can achieve liquidity levels comparable to centralized exchanges, where a significant portion of trading traditionally occurs. However, despite advancements in liquidity, there are challenges regarding pricing mechanisms, especially when the relevant markets are not functioning. This highlights the need for further developments and optimizations in decentralized platforms.

One of the key aspects identified in the study is that the remaining gap between DeFi and CEX is primarily due to how platforms price various assets. For instance, when the primary market is closed, prices for stocks and commodities can fluctuate, creating certain challenges for decentralized platforms like Hyperliquid. Thus, while Hyperliquid has achieved impressive results in terms of liquidity, it is necessary to continue working on pricing mechanisms to ensure more efficient trading in low liquidity or closed market conditions.
