Chicago Mercantile Exchange Launches Two New Cryptocurrency Indices

CME Group introduced the products on September 1. The CME CF Emerging Crypto Index tracks altcoins. The second product is called the CME CF Crypto Market Index. Both baskets include assets with high market capitalization. The first index contains the ten leading alternative coins. Bitcoin and Ether have been deliberately excluded from this list. The basket includes BNB, XRP, and Solana. Hyperliquid, Chainlink, and Stellar Lumens are also represented. The list is rounded out by Sui, Uniswap, Avalanche, and Aave.

The second index tracks twelve different crypto assets simultaneously. This basket includes Bitcoin and Ether. The exchange calculates quotes for both indices on a continuous basis. Calculations are conducted in real time around the clock. Daily fixing price versions are published every day. This occurs at 4:00 PM London time. The same time is used for New York and Singapore. Asset weights depend on their market capitalization. Larger coins receive a greater share in the indices. The exchange plans to review the composition of the baskets twice a year.

Rebalancing will take place on the first business day of June. A similar procedure will occur on the first business day of December. Assets must meet secure custody requirements. Memecoins are strictly prohibited from inclusion in these indices. The exchange verifies the total value locked in the network. This metric is compared against the fully diluted capitalization. An exception exists for coins without exchange-traded fund standards. Such assets may be included in the basket under special conditions. They must meet the requirements for thirty days. The maximum share of such assets is capped at ten percent.

In June, the exchange launched the Nasdaq futures index. The base basket included Bitcoin, Ether, and Bitcoin Cash. Solana, Ripple, and Cardano were also present. Chainlink and Stellar Lumens rounded out the list. The aggregator CoinGecko launched an index in 2023. The product tracks coins with securities status. US authorities classified several major projects under this designation. The leaders of that index were BNB, Cardano, and Solana. The Tron coin also made the list of leaders.
