Shares of Circle Internet Group showed an increase of 3.7 percent on Monday amid the official announcement of the acquisition of a large-scale portfolio of blockchain patents previously owned by IBM Corporation. According to the press release, the transaction covers more than 680 patent families and almost one thousand granted patents worldwide. These assets include technologies used in the banking sector, financial services, insurance, corporate infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations, which significantly strengthens the technological foundation of the organization.
As a result of this transaction, Circle officially secured the status of the leading holder of blockchain patents in the United States. The company's management emphasized that strengthening its position in the field of intellectual property will directly contribute to the development and protection of key ecosystem products. These include the USDC stablecoin, the Circle Payments Network, the Arc protocol, and other financial instruments based on distributed ledger technology.
In addition to the direct transfer of intellectual property rights, the parties expressed their intention to explore additional opportunities for strategic commercial cooperation. Sarah Wilson, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Circle, noted that patent management is fundamental to the implementation of the corporate mission. According to her, the partnership with a technological pioneer like IBM significantly expands Circle's capabilities to create a reliable infrastructure that ensures the functioning of global finance in a digital environment.
