Citi and DBS Complete First Tokenized Transaction Over the Weekend

Citi and DBS conducted their first tokenized transaction between Singapore and the USA, marking an important event in the field of international money transfers. The operation was completed last Saturday, demonstrating the capabilities of using tokenized deposits through a blockchain solution from Swift. According to DBS, the transfer process took only a few minutes. This is a significant improvement compared to the usual practice, where such transactions can traditionally take up to two business days.

The tokenized transfer became possible due to the implementation of blockchain technologies, which allow bypassing the time constraints of traditional banking services. This also indicates the growing desire of major fintech companies and banks to explore new ways for efficient international payments. It is worth noting that in August, the first tokenized transactions were already implemented by major players such as Standard Chartered and HSBC. In July of this year, Swift announced the launch of its blockchain base for payment systems, paving the way for testing tokenized transactions involving 17 of the largest banks.

This move by Citi and DBS confirms the trend in the financial sector towards optimizing and simplifying transactional processes, which could significantly change industry standards. In the future, there are plans to launch an additional network of tokenized deposits, which will operate under the guidance of The Clearing House, as well as the development of tokenization standards among various financial institutions, including a systemic project between JPMorgan and DBS. Overall, the success of the first operation opens new horizons for market participants regarding the further application of blockchain technologies in monetary circulation.
