Coinbase Receives Approval to Operate Its Own Clearing Center

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO). This regulatory decision will allow Coinbase's division to independently handle settlements for a range of derivative financial instruments.

The acquired status applies to fully collateralized futures contracts, options on futures, and swaps. Thus, Coinbase will be able to perform clearing operations within its own infrastructure without outsourcing this function to third-party organizations when it comes to the relevant product categories. One of the features of the new system, as noted by the company, is the support for settlements using the stablecoin USDC. Coinbase stated that its clearing infrastructure is designed to work with this asset around the clock. This approach is intended to ensure the execution of settlement operations without being tied to the traditional working hours of financial organizations.

Following the registration, Coinbase combines several infrastructure elements for derivative operations within a single corporate structure. It includes Coinbase Financial Markets, operating as a Futures Commission Merchant (FCM), the Coinbase Derivatives exchange with the status of a Designated Contract Market (DCM), and now Coinbase Clearing, which has received the status of a Derivatives Clearing Organization.

This structure allows the company to distribute the main stages of working with derivative instruments among its own divisions. The exchange is responsible for organizing trades, the brokerage structure interacts with market participants, and the clearing division performs functions related to the provision and settlement of concluded contracts. Coinbase filed the application for registration of Coinbase Clearing on November 14, 2025. After obtaining the relevant status, the company gained the opportunity to move to the next stage of developing its own infrastructure for derivatives.

However, Coinbase does not plan to completely abandon the services of third-party organizations. For certain products, external partners may still be used when necessary, taking into account the specifics of particular instruments. In particular, this concerns some margin derivatives and plans to launch perpetual futures on individual stocks. Thus, the new status of Coinbase Clearing expands the number of operations that the company can perform within its own infrastructure. Previously, certain stages of working with derivative instruments required the involvement of external participants, whereas now some of the corresponding functions can be carried out by Coinbase's own divisions.
