David Schwartz from Ripple: Big Changes Await DeFi by 2027

David Schwartz, CTO Emeritus of Ripple, who helped develop the XRP Ledger from scratch, hinted at major changes in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector: a breakthrough aimed at the mass user might be just around the corner. In a recent interview, Schwartz expressed optimism about the future of DeFi in 2027.

"Overall, tokenization in the industry is really gaining momentum, and regulatory barriers are starting to fall," Schwartz noted. The Ripple veteran also discussed how an entirely new market could form around blockchain applications for finance. "What will the blockchain user look like? What will the product be?" Schwartz pondered, noting that the formation of such a market is comparable to the vast user base that Android or iOS app developers have. "It's a world that will be incredibly exciting. And we are really close," he emphasized.

Schwartz seemed to imply that the next stage of blockchain adoption could bring DeFi products to the general public, not just crypto enthusiasts. However, he refrained from mentioning specific products and did not provide any timelines.

AI agents could change DeFi

In the conversation, Schwartz also touched on the idea of using AI agents to manage the finances of ordinary people. "One can imagine a world where everyone's money is managed by agents. It solves all these problems for them," he said. The Ripple veteran then questioned how DeFi would adapt to this change. "What would you want from DeFi in such a world? I think that's the problem we are facing," Schwartz noted.
