Elon Musk stated on September 14, 2026, that Grok 5, the next major model from xAI, is expected to be a version capable of achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). Musk made this announcement in two related posts on X, which immediately sparked discussions among researchers and traders.
On the same day, he reported that the Grok 4.8 model, built on xAI's new C++ software platform and featuring 2.5 trillion parameters, will complete its training this week and move on to reinforcement learning. When asked how close Grok 4.8 is to AGI, Musk replied, "That will be Grok 5." He also clarified his roadmap, indicating that Grok 4.7 will be roughly at the level of Anthropic's Opus 5.0 model, stronger in some aspects and weaker in others, while its multimodal capabilities still require refinement. Grok 4.8 promises significant improvements, and Grok 4.9 is expected to reach the level of Astra or Fable.
If Grok 5 indeed demonstrates capabilities at or above human level, it could have serious implications beyond the current limits of chatbots. Musk has previously claimed that advanced AI systems could significantly boost global economic growth within years, accelerating progress in fields such as scientific research, robotics, and software development. However, this potentially carries serious risks, such as misaligned system goals, challenges in management after surpassing human intelligence, and the possibility of sharp jumps in capabilities. On the same day, Musk supported calls to slow down AI development from Dario Amodei of Anthropic, highlighting the tension between the pursuit of AGI and warnings about the associated dangers.
