ENS Seeks DAO Approval for Ethereum Name System Upgrade

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has submitted a request for approval to its decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) to activate an updated naming protocol known as ENSv2. ENS founder Nick Johnson has presented an executable project proposal for the activation of ENSv2, the next version of the protocol. If the proposal is approved, new .eth registrations will be suspended for several hours during the transition, while existing domain owners can continue to renew their names without needing to migrate. The update introduces a redesigned registry architecture with more flexible domain management and permissions. After activation, ENS Labs plans to transfer its remaining administrative powers over the updated contracts to the DAO.

New .eth registrations will be moved to the updated system after domain records synchronization. Johnson warned that new registrations will be temporarily unavailable on both versions for several hours during the transition. Existing domain owners are not required to migrate, and their names will continue to function, according to the proposal. ENS Labs has also reserved existing .eth names for their current owners in the updated system, allowing users to migrate when they are ready.

The activation proposal remains in the draft stage and must undergo a blockchain DAO vote before implementation. According to ENS governance rules, executable proposals require at least 1% voter participation, amounting to 1 million ENS votes, and majority approval during a seven-day voting period. If accepted, the update will be subject to a minimum two-day waiting period before execution. The voting date has not yet been announced.
