European telecommunications companies have successfully deployed a unique secure communications infrastructure. Italian company Sparkle and operator Hellas Sat have established a quantum-resistant satellite connection. The new channel links Greece and Cyprus via a secure communications line. This project became the first such channel between two countries. The connection runs between Sparkle's data center in Athens, Greece. Hellas Sat's infrastructure in Cyprus serves as the second point on the route. The total length of this satellite route is approximately 72,000 kilometers. The companies are using an existing satellite channel to transmit protected data.
Security is provided by a dedicated Quantum Safe Interconnect solution. This technology guarantees quantum-resistant delivery of cryptographic communication keys. The system ensures automatic key rotation within the IPsec connection. The goal is to protect a standard satellite connection against future threats. Quantum computers will be capable of breaking modern data encryption algorithms. The new technology proactively shields infrastructure from such attacks. The companies already tested this system in March of this year. Testing was conducted between two data centers located in Greece. The next stage involved validating the technology within satellite infrastructure.
The telecommunications companies intend to assess the feasibility of a commercial service launch. Quantum-resistant satellite services will be available to enterprise clients. The technology is suited for companies with distributed remote facilities. Critical infrastructure will receive reliable protection for transmitted data. The International Organization for Standardization previously included a post-quantum algorithm. The Classic McEliece asymmetric encryption standard received official recognition. This algorithm is considered resistant to attacks from quantum computing systems. The global industry is actively preparing for the advent of quantum computers.
The telecommunications sector is investing in post-quantum information security technologies. Satellite operators are building infrastructure for secure data transmission.
