The Glamsterdam upgrade was activated on the Sepolia testnet on October 6, 2026, at 13:53:36 UTC, increasing the gas limit from 60 million to 200 million. During the official activation of the upgrade, Pooja Ranjan noted that "the upgrade was activated on Sepolia on October 6 at 1:53 PM UTC." Glamsterdam represents an important step in the development of Ethereum, including changes such as the separation of roles between proposers and builders of blocks, as well as block-level access lists. These changes aim to improve network performance and increase the volume of processed transactions, which is crucial for the further scaling of Ethereum.
The transition to a 200 million gas limit is seen not only as a performance test but also as an opportunity for developers to assess the ability of nodes to handle larger amounts of data. This check is important ahead of upcoming network activities, including the transition to the next testing phase called Hoodi.
Alongside the increase in the gas limit, Glamsterdam also changes the way gas is accounted for, which may affect wallets and tools that by default use fixed gas values. Specifically, the base transfer of ETH to an existing account will remain at 21,000 gas, while operations that create new states may cost more. After the completion of the Glamsterdam phase, Ethereum will continue the development of the Hegotá upgrade, scheduled for 2027, which is expected to include improvements related to both the economic aspects of validators and enhanced privacy in transaction processes.
