Global Interest in Bitcoin Plummeted in October 2026

Global interest in Bitcoin in October 2026 significantly declined, reaching multi-year lows. According to Google Trends, the volume of search queries for "bitcoin" and "BTCUSD" dropped to the lowest levels in several years. This trend was highlighted by on-chain analyst Willy Woo, who published a long-term chart of user activity.

The decline in interest coincided with a prolonged market correction. After reaching an all-time high of $126,080 in October 2025, the first cryptocurrency entered a cooling phase. In mid-October 2026, BTC is trading in the range of 82,500–83,400, losing about 4% since the beginning of the month. This weakens expectations of the traditional autumn rally.

Historically, periods of minimal search activity among retail investors have preceded the formation of long-term price floors. Willy Woo uses this data to support a contrarian approach: "The best time to buy BTC is when no one is interested in it. The best time to sell is when absolutely everyone is involved." Search peaks in 2017 and 2021 coincided with the tops of bull cycles and the profit-taking phase of major players.

Google Trends statistics, meanwhile, showed a stratification in audience behavior. Queries related to Bitcoin are declining, but the number of general queries "buy cryptocurrency" reached new annual highs in October. This indicates that retail capital is not leaving the industry but is being redistributed into alternative tokens in search of higher returns.

The change in the structure of the crypto market in 2026 largely explains why the decline in search activity has had a weaker impact on the price compared to previous cycles. The direct dependence of the exchange rate on the actions of retail users has weakened with the influx of institutional capital. The main volumes of liquidity through spot Bitcoin ETFs, pension funds, and hedge funds pass through specialized trading terminals and over-the-counter (OTC) platforms, bypassing search engines. In these conditions, Google Trends has ceased to be a direct driver of the exchange rate but, according to the author of the material, remains a key indicator of retail sentiment and the level of speculative overheating.
