On September 23, 2026, Google opened the Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash video model in the Vids video editor for free to all Google account holders, including personal and Workspace accounts. A paid subscription is no longer needed; generation works in the browser on a computer at vids new. Previously, access required a Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscription. The free limit is six generations per month for AI clips and AI avatars combined, plus 50 credits for other AI features. Clip duration ranges from 3 to 10 seconds, with resolutions of 720p or 1080p. Google Vids is a browser-based video editor from the Workspace suite, organized like Docs or Slides: the project is stored on Google Drive, can be opened via a link, and edited collaboratively with colleagues.
Vids offers four modes. Create generates a clip based on a text description, and up to seven reference images or an AI avatar can be attached to the request. Animate brings a uploaded photo in JPG or PNG to life. Edit modifies uploaded video; if it's longer than 10 seconds, the model will process only the last 10 seconds, with up to three references. Extend prolongs a clip from the current session, maintaining lighting, environment, and character appearance, as the model analyzes up to 10 seconds of the previous video. Formats 16:9 and 9:16 are available, with a frame rate of 24 fps. Each clip receives an invisible SynthID watermark. Through the Gemini API, more capabilities are available: extension up to 40 seconds, first and last frame, drafts in 360p, upscale to 4K. Google promises to add voiceover on Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite in more than 100 languages, with no launch date specified.
Limitations of the free version. The quota is six generations per month, enough for one short video. The maximum length of a single clip is 10 seconds; longer scenes are assembled from extensions, each consuming the limit. Drafts in 360p, as in the API, are not available in Vids. The help states that generated images and videos are intended for use only within Vids. Generation is subject to Google's prohibited use policy for generative AI: deepfakes, content without the consent of those depicted, and illegal materials are prohibited. The SynthID tag cannot be removed. Some AI features, including help me create, work only in English. Most of these restrictions are lifted with the paid Google AI Pro plan with 500 seconds per month or by switching to the Gemini API.
