Google, part of the Alphabet holding company, has announced its intention to invest up to $40 billion in a startup called Anthropic, reinforcing an already close partnership. The first tranche of $10 billion has already been agreed upon by developer Claude, estimated at $350 billion, and will go toward a massive expansion of computing resources. The remaining $30 billion will depend on whether new versions of models meet their performance targets.

Previously, Amazon had announced large injections into Anthropic, promising up to $25 billion, and in February the startup raised $30 billion in another round of funding, receiving offers from venture capitalists that implied a company valuation of up to $800 billion. The rapid growth in revenue, which soared annually from around $9 billion at the end of 2025 to more than $30 billion in April 2026, largely ensured the success of the programmer-oriented tool Claude Code.

To cope with the surge in demand for its models and maintain the pace of development, Anthropic is entering into multi-year contracts with Broadcom and CoreWeave, and aims to access 1 GW of power from Amazon’s chips by the end of the year.
