Grayscale intends to convert Litecoin Trust into an ETF format

On September 11, Grayscale filed an amendment that could bring its Litecoin Trust closer to an ETF structure. The amendment proposes renaming the trust to Grayscale Litecoin Trust ETF, retaining the ticker LTCN. If the change is approved, it will simplify investors' access to Litecoin [LTC] through a national exchange. Moreover, adopting an ETF structure for LTCN will allow for the creation of new shares and the redemption of existing packages. This could reduce the value discrepancies between LTCN and its Litecoin assets, leading to improved liquidity. As of June 30, the trust's assets amounted to $82.3 million, with a total of 1.97 million Litecoin. Meanwhile, there were 24.25 million shares in circulation, indicating an established investor base.

Thus, this filing represents a step towards a more streamlined and liquid investment structure for LTCN. However, regulatory approval and listing on NYSE Arca are required before the conversion. If approved, this could enhance accessibility for investors wishing to invest in Litecoin. Transitioning to a national exchange could change the ways LTCN is traded after its prolonged presence in the over-the-counter market, where the LTCN price often significantly deviated from its intrinsic value. At one point, its premium reached 5893%, while at another, the discount was 67%. A national exchange and the ability to create or redeem shares could help reduce historical differences between the current LTCN price and its underlying value, making LTCN more convenient for trading and improving price accuracy.

At the same time, Litecoin already provides a regulated investment opportunity for all investors through the Canary product, LTCC. However, due to the relatively small size of the LTCC product line, there is limited interest from investors. LTCN will enter with assets of about $82 million and 24 million shares, which should provide a more solid base than existing Litecoin ETFs. However, this listing will not expand the Litecoin ETF market unless it attracts new capital.
