Hyperscale Data has ceased all Bitcoin mining operations at its Michigan facility, pivoting to the development of an artificial intelligence (AI) data center.
This decision came amid a sharp decline in the company's Bitcoin holdings — down approximately 79% since the end of July — leaving it with 215 BTC. The strategic move is aimed at fulfilling a 20-megawatt (MW) AI computing capacity contract under a 10-year agreement that could potentially generate more than $1.2 billion over its maximum term if all renewal options are exercised. Furthermore, Hyperscale has the option to add an additional 32 MW, which could push projected revenue to over $3 billion. While the potential for significant earnings exists, Hyperscale cautioned that these expansion plans remain preliminary and are contingent on financing and regulatory approval.
Following a recent inspection by an unnamed California-based neo-cloud provider, all miners at the Michigan site have been shut down, and the associated mining equipment is set to be sold. On July 30, the company reported holding approximately 1,006 BTC, with 100 BTC having been sold to fund AI projects and establish a Bitcoin-backed credit line for the Michigan campus. More recently, Hyperscale sold around 65 BTC for $5.1 million during the week ending August 30, directing those proceeds toward further development in Michigan. The sharp reduction in holdings places Hyperscale 84th among public companies holding Bitcoin, according to BitcoinTreasuries NET.
Against the backdrop of these changes, Hyperscale Data shares have suffered significantly, closing at $0.1984 on Wednesday — a 17% decline and an all-time low. The drop followed the completion of a 1-for-5 reverse stock split. Split-adjusted trading began on August 25, shortly before the latest decline.
The broader implications of these shifts signal a transition within the company as it navigates the complex cryptocurrency mining landscape while simultaneously investing in AI technology. Market participants will be watching closely to see how Hyperscale manages its AI investments amid a shrinking Bitcoin treasury.
