The central government of India has issued licenses to three companies to provide satellite communication services: Starlink, owned by Elon Musk, as well as Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. However, the companies still need spectrum and security clearance to launch their services.
On Wednesday at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026, Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Business Operations at Starlink, stated that the company has tailored its operations specifically to meet Indian security requirements and other regulatory norms. According to her, Starlink has established controls at every level for India and stores Indian user data within the country. She noted that the company has already invested in infrastructure, created 20 gateway sites with hundreds of antennas, and established partnerships with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. "For the past five years, Starlink has been closely collaborating with Indian regulators; we have already invested and built ground infrastructure to be ready to serve India," Dreyer said.
She added that India's digital economy is growing rapidly, but the last mile remains the most challenging for connectivity. In her opinion, Starlink offers the greatest potential to accelerate connectivity for 100% of India, allowing people to access services in minutes rather than years.
