Indian Coal Exchange Applies for License

Indian Coal Exchange has applied for a license from the Coal Regulatory Authority – the regulator of coal exchanges. The application was submitted by a subsidiary of the Indian Energy Exchange. The initiative aims to create a more efficient trading platform for coal in the country.

The Indian Coal Exchange will serve as a physical delivery coal trading exchange, providing an organized, transparent, and technology-driven platform in accordance with the Coal Exchange Rules of 2026. The Indian Energy Exchange established the Indian Coal Exchange on June 1, 2026, with a capital of 1 billion rupees.

The exchange will facilitate trading by bringing together buyers and sellers on a single neutral platform, ensuring effective pricing and broader market access. Transactions will take place at designated delivery points. The creation of a platform where sellers and buyers can meet will promote more active coal trading and improve conditions for market participants.

The project builds on the 18-year experience of the Indian Energy Exchange in establishing transparent, technology-driven, and market-oriented trading platforms. The Indian Coal Exchange will complement the business of the Indian Energy Exchange in the electricity market, as well as the Indian Gas Exchange – the leading platform for natural gas trading in India – and its role in issuing international renewable energy certificates. This will expand the group's offerings in the energy market across the value chain.
