Japan to build first national AI factory based on 27,500 graphics processors

Japan is launching the creation of the country's first national artificial intelligence factory. The project is being implemented in collaboration with Nvidia and the new Noetra consortium. The facility's computing power will be an impressive 140 megawatts. The system will be based on the Nvidia DSX platform and use Vera Rubin NVL72 racks. Each such rack combines 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs. In total, the project provides for the installation of 27,500 graphics accelerators and 13,750 processors. The components will be connected via a high-speed Spectrum-X Ethernet network infrastructure. This system is designed to train neural networks with a trillion parameters.

The facility will become the computing base for the FRONTia government program. It focuses on robotics, industrial automation and the creation of digital twins. Preliminary estimates of the cost of rack equipment reach 2.7 billion dollars. The GPUs alone will cost about $1.5 billion. The initial financing of the project is set at 387.3 billion yen. This is equivalent to about 2.4 billion US dollars. The long-term goal is to allocate up to 1 trillion yen over five years. The Noetra consortium is led by such giants as SoftBank Corp., Sony, NEC and Honda. The group also includes 44 other companies and organizations.

FRONTia's roadmap goes far beyond simple language models. By fiscal year 2026, it is planned to create a basic reasoning model. By 2028, developers will introduce an omnimodal system for text, video, and audio processing. By 2030, the goal is to achieve native AI in the real world. Such systems will receive spatial perception for work in factories and in healthcare.
