Jeonbuk Bank has become the first bank in South Korea to offer bitcoin-backed loans for corporate clients. The service is limited to corporate borrowers seeking funds for business operations. Clients can use their cryptocurrency assets as collateral by providing bitcoin, which will be held by registered cryptocurrency service providers, eliminating the bank's direct ownership of the pledged assets. As of October 1, 2026, new regulations have come into effect allowing the bank to recover unpaid loans through judicial sales of pledged bitcoin. Jeonbuk Bank has developed its own cryptocurrency asset evaluation system based on prices from multiple global exchanges and market volatility analysis to accurately assess collateral assets. This evaluation system has been implemented by the bank in compliance with South Korean regulations, allowing it to mitigate risks associated with cryptocurrency market fluctuations. Since Jeonbuk Bank uses information sources from multiple exchanges, it creates more stable and transparent conditions for evaluating cryptocurrency collateral.
Clients who fail to meet their loan obligations may face foreclosure proceedings, where the proceeds from the sale of cryptocurrency will be used to repay the debt without requiring the bank to directly acquire bitcoin. Jeonbuk Bank looks to the experience of other major financial institutions, such as JPMorgan Chase, which began accepting bitcoin as collateral for loans in March 2026. This indicates that the world of financial services is gradually integrating cryptocurrencies into its practices, and Jeonbuk Bank plans to expand its offerings based on regulatory changes and market demand.
The bank's plans to develop additional digital assets and financial services confirm a strategy aimed at transforming Jeonbuk Bank into a crypto-banking sphere. Bank President Park Chun-won sees digital assets as an important part of the future financial infrastructure. The bank has already developed experience in providing real deposit accounts and withdrawal accounts for cryptocurrency exchanges, making it the only regional bank in South Korea offering such services. Additionally, Jeonbuk Bank is conducting technical projects aimed at integrating bank accounts and wallets, providing its clients with access to both services through a single interface.
