Popular American investor and Shark Tank star Kevin O'Leary called stablecoins the safest area in cryptocurrency. In a post on X, he divided crypto assets into three groups based on volatility, regulation, and adoption prospects. "Everyone knows crypto is volatile, but crypto is different things," O'Leary noted.
He named stablecoins as the safest category, citing the GENIUS Act, which created federal regulation for payment stablecoins in the US. "You would call stablecoins the safest right now," he said. "They are truly digital money." However, stablecoins are not entirely risk-free: their safety depends on the quality of reserves, the issuer, and redemption conditions. The law, passed in July 2025, requires issuers to hold reserves of acceptable liquid assets.
O'Leary singled out Bitcoin in a separate category: according to him, the leading cryptocurrency is much more volatile. "A bit riskier and much more volatile is, of course, Bitcoin." He emphasized that Bitcoin remains a speculative asset, and its adoption by institutions is hindered by regulatory issues—at least for now. The investor mentioned the CLARITY Act, which has not yet become law: in September, the bill suffered a significant defeat in the Senate.
Speaking about Ethereum and other blockchain tokens, O'Leary compared blockchain to corporate software, emphasizing that adoption is critically important.
