Zakura Team Cuts Zcash Private Transaction Preparation Time to 200 Milliseconds

The Zakura team has released an open set of cryptographic libraries. The new development has been named Zakura Common. The product is designed for the ecosystem of the privacy-focused cryptocurrency Zcash. Developers report a significant speed improvement in transaction processing. Transaction preparation time has been reduced from three seconds to 200 milliseconds. This refers to the computations performed before submission to the network. Transaction confirmation on the blockchain itself is not affected. The optimizations do not require updates to Zcash's base protocol. The libraries are available under a dual MIT and Apache 2.0 license. Wallet developers can integrate them into the live network.

Individual components demonstrated impressive benchmark results. Cryptographic proof generation became fourteen times faster on mobile devices. On desktop computers, the improvement was fivefold. Sinsemilla hash computation is now twenty-one times faster. Trial decryption improved by one and a half times. zk-SNARK verification runs four to eight times faster. Developers attribute the results to simultaneous changes across several components. Some solutions are based on well-established cryptographic approaches. Others were created specifically for Zcash by the team. The core development is consolidated in a single repository, zakura-core/common. It contains modified versions of librustzcash and other Rust-based libraries.

The team is separately developing a set of components for private wallets. The project is called zakura-core/wallet-libraries. PIR tools are planned to be added in the future. These allow data to be queried without revealing the user's interests to the server. The initial announcement mentioned an upcoming version, Zakura 1.3.0. Developers published the v1.3.0 release on August 29. The team invited developers to adopt the new component set. The Tachyon project has also migrated to the new architecture. The network based on Zakura nodes is already handling the new requirements. The NU7 proposal calls for a 25-second block interval. The current interval is seventy-five seconds. The corresponding document ZIP 218 will reduce the delay by nearly three times.

The proposal also restricts operations in the Sapling and Orchard private pools. The maximum data volume for synchronization will be reduced by thirty-seven percent. The figure will drop from 271 to 169 megabytes per day. The number of trial decryptions will decrease from 4.8 to 2.3 million. Orchard's estimated throughput will increase from 2.9 to 6.6 transactions per second. On July 28, an emergency update was activated on Zcash. Developers discovered a critical vulnerability in the Orchard pool. The upgrade restricted the previous pool and launched a new private pool, Ironwood. Network scalability remains a priority for the developers of the privacy cryptocurrency.
