Kraken Owner Acquires AAVE Tokens for DeFi Business Development

The parent company of the Kraken cryptocurrency exchange, Payward, announced on November 5, 2026, the purchase of AAVE tokens through its affiliated investment fund Digital Asset Special Investments I, LP, in collaboration with clients of its asset management division. The acquisition is part of Payward's strategy to expand its presence in the decentralized finance (DeFi) segment.
The tokens were purchased on the secondary market. The company did not disclose the number of AAVE acquired, the transaction costs, or the dates of the purchases. Payward also indicated the possibility of additional purchases in the future.
According to the company, the investment is related to the development of Payward Asset Management, which provides clients with access to digital assets, structured income products, and tokenized financial instruments.
“This investment reflects our long-term confidence in the prospects of on-chain lending and DeFi, as well as the growing demand from clients for access to the infrastructure shaping the future of finance,” said Gurpreet Oberoi, Payward's Vice President of Asset Management and Institutional Business.
Representatives of Payward and Aave also reported that they are considering opportunities for further collaboration. However, specific initiatives, timelines for implementation, and terms of potential agreements have not yet been disclosed.
Why Payward is investing in Aave
Aave is one of the largest decentralized lending protocols. Its users can lend digital assets and receive loans secured by cryptocurrency directly through smart contracts.
According to DeFiLlama, as of November 5, 2026, the total value locked (TVL) in Aave was approximately $17.18 billion. Over the previous 30 days, the protocol collected approximately $39.63 million in fees, of which about $5.15 million were accounted for as the protocol's revenue.
The AAVE token is used for ecosystem governance. Its holders can participate in voting on proposals related to protocol parameters and the use of Aave DAO funds.
Previously, the Aave community approved the Aave Will Win initiative, which involves directing revenues from Aave-branded products to the DAO treasury. However, participation in governance does not automatically entitle token holders to all of the protocol's revenue.
For Payward, acquiring AAVE complements the development of financial services beyond cryptocurrency trading. The company is expanding its presence in derivatives, tokenized assets, payment infrastructure, and services for institutional clients.
In particular, Payward is developing the xStocks tokenized stock platform and Kraken Prime infrastructure for major market participants. Such directions allow the company to offer clients products related to both traditional and digital financial instruments.
The purchase of AAVE could lay the foundation for further interaction with decentralized lending infrastructure. However, it is not yet known whether Payward plans to integrate Aave into its own services or will limit itself to investment participation.
The company did not disclose the size of the AAVE package and the voting share it provides. Therefore, it is impossible to assess Payward's potential influence on protocol governance based on the current announcement.
