Mango Excellent Media shares rise 64% after AI-generated drama debut

Mango Excellent Media saw a remarkable 64% increase in its shares following the debut of China's first fully AI-generated long-form television drama, 'The Later Journey to the West,' on August 31. This surge marked the largest weekly gain for the company since January 2015, positioning Mango as the top performer on the MSCI Asia Pacific Index, which tracks large and mid-cap stocks in the region. The excitement from investors stems from the innovative content produced by AI technology, which is being viewed as a significant opportunity in the entertainment industry.

The rise of Mango Excellent Media aligns with the broader trend in the market where enthusiasm for AI-generated content is growing. Notably, during the first quarter of this year, around 128,000 micro-dramas were released in China, with 95% of them being AI-generated. Industry analysts such as Morgan Stanley's Rebecca Xu have referred to the recent regulatory changes that allow for a 'review-while-broadcasting' model, which empowers content producers to submit episodes for approval in phases. This flexibility enables them to gather audience feedback quickly and make adjustments, potentially enhancing viewer engagement and satisfaction.

As investors increasingly focus on the capabilities of AI in creating engaging video content, the competitive landscape is expected to expand. Citigroup's Brian Gong highlighted this evolving scenario by mentioning that investors may be underestimating the short-term commercial benefits of AI video production in China. Companies like ByteDance maintain industry standards with their advanced video generation models, while rivals like MiniMax Group and Kuaishou Technology are also establishing their presence. The future performance of Mango's stock will largely depend on how well its new drama resonates with audiences beyond the initial viewing period.
