Mastercard Launches Payment Protection Tool for Stablecoins

Mastercard introduced Stablecoin Security, a risk analysis tool that allows financial institutions to check stablecoin payments for fraud, scams, and sanction risks before the funds are sent to the blockchain. The presentation took place on Monday at the Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas.

Stablecoin Security combines Mastercard's payment analytics with blockchain analytics: risk assessment occurs throughout the transaction process, from payment initiation to movement on the public ledger. The tool analyzes the source of funds, checks for exposure to restricted entities and scam indicators, and generates a risk assessment before settlement, integrating into existing compliance and anti-fraud processes. Access is provided via a platform-independent API.

The first participants in the program are Borderless xyz and Keyrails, both of which went through the Mastercard Start Path accelerator. Borderless xyz connects financial institutions with licensed stablecoin providers in over 113 countries and 72 currencies; Keyrails specializes in large payments in international trade, primarily in emerging markets.

The reason is BIS data: of the 593 million stablecoin transfers in 2025, nearly 60% were complex multi-step transactions rather than simple one-to-one transfers. Such operations may involve multiple addresses and intermediaries, making it more difficult for banks to determine the original source of funds.

"Stablecoins open up new opportunities for value exchange, but financial institutions need appropriate analytics and controls to participate confidently," said Ann Johnson, Executive Vice President of Security Solutions at Mastercard.
