Meta has released financial results for the second quarter of 2026, demonstrating the discrepancy between revenue growth and declining key profitability indicators. The corporation's revenue increased by 28 percent year-on-year, reaching $ 60.8 billion, but this figure was lower than the consensus forecasts of analysts, who expected $ 63.15 billion. Against this background, net income decreased by 14 percent to $15.8 billion, while diluted earnings per share decreased by 13 percent to $6.18. The market reacted to the publication of the report with an immediate correction: during the preliminary trading, the company's share price decreased by about 9 percent, dropping to $533.
Despite the pressure on margins, the platform's operational metrics have maintained positive momentum. The average number of daily active users increased by 3 percent, reaching 3.6 billion people, and the number of ad impressions increased by 14 percent. At the same time, the company's capital expenditures showed a sharp jump of 55 percent, reaching $42 billion. The main driver of such a significant increase in costs was large-scale investments in the development of artificial intelligence infrastructure. As a result of the redistribution of financial resources, the corporation's free cash flow decreased from $8.55 billion in the same period last year to $784 million in the reporting quarter.
The current financial situation reflects the difficult period of the corporation's strategic transformation. Previously, the company's management, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, acknowledged certain miscalculations in the process of a large-scale reorganization and a shift in priorities towards artificial intelligence technologies. This course adjustment followed the closure of the previously unprofitable metaverse project, which required a significant restructuring of business processes. Investors are currently assessing management's ability to effectively monetize implemented solutions and restore the pace of free cash flow generation in a highly competitive digital advertising market.
